The Baltic Handysize Index (BHSI) is a measure of the strength of smaller dry bulk vessel spot freight earnings (basis 28,000 dwt bulk carriers). It was established on a trial basis in May 2006 and was formally launched in January 2007.
The Baltic Supramax Index (BSI) (basis 52,000 dwt bulk carriers) was officially launched in January 2006. Since April 2017, the BSI is based on a standard 58,000 dwt carrier for the calculation.
The BHSI and BSI reflect average spot market TCE earnings of several representative routes. The BDI is the overall dry bulk freight market indicator made up of 20 key routes across the Capesize, Panamax, Supramax and Handysize segments.
